The family heirloom of a merchant samurai family, Mutsunokami didn’t see a lot of action in his career. Though he was passed down from generation to generation, as a sword, he didn’t gain much fame in battle if any at all. Things changed when he was secretly passed on to a hotblooded young man in the family named Sakamoto Ryoma in 1862. Ryoma decided to leave their domain, Tosa, without permission, becoming not only a ronin but an outlaw that was sentenced to death if caught. It wasn’t ideal but it was certainly more fun than being on display in the estate.
After a failed assassination attempt that resulted in an unusual friendship with the target, Ryoma befriended Katsu Kaishu, a supporter of westernization and modernization in Japan. Ryoma became his protege and quickly adopted his views. Ryoma received a pardon from Tosa on the condition he return but he refused, opting to continue traveling Japan without a master and as an outlaw hoping to revolutionize Japan. If he could have his way, swords would become a thing of the past and guns would take precedent, sending Mutsunokami into an early retirement on some sort of display…
… And that was okay. In the same way that Ryoma had adopted someone else’s views, Mutsunokami came to adopt Ryoma’s. Mutsunokami, like Ryoma, agreed that swords were old fashioned and that guns were superior to swords. Even more, he wanted to see a new Japan— a modern one. And if that meant he would lose his purpose in the future… well, he still had the present! And as long as he could be of use, he would serve to make Ryoma’s dream come true. At Ryoma’s side, he traveled across Japan by land and sea, learning all sorts of things about the world. His days were numbered but they were good days until Ryoma’s sudden assassination. Mutsunokami was returned to the family, ten years later, swords were outlawed, and eventually, he was donated to a museum in Ryoma’s honor.
Centuries later, in 2205, Mutsunokami’s spirit is summoned by a saniwa sage to travel back in time with other sword spirits to protect the past. If swords were old fashioned before, they’re even more out dated now but not one to complain, he dedicates himself to the saniwa’s cause (while still praising the superiority of guns over swords). As a sword, he does everything he can to be of use to the saniwa so that they can achieve their goal, just as he had helped Sakamoto Ryoma long ago. While he’s here, he’ll enjoy the new things too.
Given his time with Ryoma and the profound impact he had on him, Mutsunokami reflects many aspects of his former master. He is energetic, friendly, and personable, able to get along with most. He is not only loud but extremely vocal about his views, bluntly declaring rather unpopular opinions that don’t make it easier for him to get along with certain rival swords. Furthermore, he’s picked up a knack for business and a preference for negotiation, given Ryoma’s economics and politics. If possible, he would prefer to talk but if it can’t be helped, it can’t be helped, and he’s the type to charge in with sword slashing and gun banging. He's outdated but he can still be useful and if he can still be useful, he wants to show off and become stronger. Ah, but don't praise him too much... it's embarrassing...

POWERS & ABILITIES |
- SPIRIT FORM His human form isn't his true form and while it can be harmed, it can take considerably more damage than a normal human body.
- SIXTH SENSE Able to sense other spirits, particularly those with dark intent.
- SWORDSMANSHIP As the spirit of a sword, he's a natural sword fighter. His default style in the training hall is the same as his former master, Hokushin Ittō-ryū. However, his actual style in the field is more of a mix between Hokushin Ittō-ryū and more unconventional tactics (like... using a gun). It's also noted that his style might come off as fighting dirty but he doesn't consider it that way.
- GUNSMANSHIP Despite being a sword spirit, he also uses a gun. This isn't cheating.

WEAKNESSES |
- TRUE FORM He fights using his true form, the sword Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki. If it is damaged, he is also hurt, and will need time to recover. If it breaks beyond repair, he will die.
